Mia was only 2 when her mom grabbed her by the hand, whispering they were leaving their stress-filled home.
Her mom, Nicole, was running from an abusive relationship. They left with only a change of clothes and $100.
Soon, the $100 was gone.
A local women’s shelter referred Nicole to the Yolo Crisis Nursery for immediate help. In turn, the Nursery staff cared for Mia while Nicole looked for work and a place to live.
Within three weeks, Nicole had landed a job, and she and Mia moved into a new apartment.
Nicole’s story is similar to so many in 2016, when the Nursery saw a big increase in women with young children escaping violent situations.
It reminds us that with a little help at just the right moment, families can avert the worst crises. Rather than free-falling, they find a path into a better future. They are empowered and their children can thrive.
As president of the Nursery’s Board of Directors this year, I’ve seen that happen again and again. Our staff’s tremendous dedication to families and the loving care provided to children is inspiring.
My message today is simple: Will you make a donation to ensure that a “little help at just the right moment” is available in 2017 for families that need it.
Thank you and best wishes for the year to come.
