Raising $61,000, One Crab Leg at a Time

Sutter HealthAt our Fifth Annual “Krustaceans for Kids” Crab Feed on March 17, we had hoped to raise $42,000 to support Nursery programs.

Instead, we raised $61,000. That’s what remain after paying expenses.

To all sponsors, guests, volunteers and donors of raffle/auction items, we offer our most sincere thanks.

Before we offer specific thank-yous, here are a few fun facts about the event:

  • Number of event sponsors: 33
  • Guests: 520
  • Pounds of crab served: 1,200
  • Pounds of shrimp: 160
  • Pounds of pasta: 50
  • Cases of wine: 20
  • Volunteers working the event: 100-plus
  • Gross revenue: $78,000
  • Percentage gross revenue exceeded expectation: 45
  • Number of at-risk children and families who will receive services as a result of the event’s success: As-yet unknown but significant.

For that final fact, we again say thank you.

“We are so grateful to our community for turning out in force and demonstrating, once again, support for the nursery’s programs to prevent child abuse, nurture healthy and resilient children, strengthen parents and preserve families,” said Jane Eadie, president of the Nursery’s Board of Directors.

Special thanks go to the event sponsors: Premier Sponsor Sutter Health; “King Crab” Sponsors James and Lucinda Childress, Davis Firefighters Local 3494, and Kaiser Permanente; “Blue Crab” Sponsors Cable Car Wash; Davis Odd Fellows and Davis Rebekah Lodge; Davis Waste Removal; Dignity Health; Sierra Health Foundation; Van Dermyden Maddux Law Corporation; Union Bank; and University Honda.

Also thank-you to our “Snow Crab” Sponsors: Brooks Painting, Carlton Plaza Senior Living, Coldwell Banker Select, Danae Kelly and Robin Garland at Coldwell Banker Select, Davis Ace Hardware, Fleet Feet Davis, Golden Arch Enterprises, HEG Farms, Heidy and Peter Kellison, Karen and Steve Adams, King Properties, Morse Custom Homes and Remodeling, Nugget Market, Penne and John Sleuter, Ron Brown Construction, Sandi and John Kniep, Stewart and Ann Teal, Swim America, Tammy and David Amaral, the Eadie Family, and the Yackzan Group.

“Many people don’t realize that this event is produced entirely by a small group of volunteers, the Friends of the Yolo Crisis Nursery,” said Eadie. “Our nursery staff members help set up the afternoon of the event, but otherwise, staff time is preserved for nursery operations. I can’t thank our volunteers enough, particularly event co-chairs Nancy Storm and Martha Bernauer.”

Other members of the small-but-mighty Friends group are Veronica Stanton,

Lynette Temple, Liz Malinoff, Maren Heise, Robin Garland, Judi Berry, Lynn Evert, Linda Dullum, Patti Sparks, and Nancy Cole. Heather Sleuter, the Nursery’s executive director, volunteers with the Friends on her own time.

The nursery’s Board and the event organizers would also like to thank the following individuals for volunteering at the crab feed: John Chuck, Cam Stoufer, Becky Heard, Todd Storm, Marc Hicks, Chelsea Hubbard, Steve Adams, Kyle Adams, Elise Adams, Carolyn Chamberlain, Susie Ford, Gary Ford, Virginia Salazar, Brenna O’Hallahan, Faye Dixon, Dan Ragland, Justine Cortez, Devon Langley, Paul Bernauer, Sandy Langley, Heidy Kellison, Bob Bowen, Robb Davis, JD Denton, Chris Denton, KC Ingram, Chase Temple, Kyle Garlick, Dave Heard, Ralph Sparks, Denise Martin, Gary Bernauer, Scotty Meehleib, Patti Swimley, John Jensen, Jack Geist, Mark Datanagan and Jonah Hendrickson.

Many thanks also to Krista DeZerega-Thomson and dozens of volunteers from the National Charity League, and to Kris Fredricksen and Girl Scout Troop 2048.

We offer thanks to the Woodland Community and Senior Center, for working with us on pricing for event space rental; to Lamppost Pizza for donating pasta sauce, and to Upper Crust Bakery for donating bread – enough to fill the back of a Volkswagen Golf hatchback from floor to ceiling.
