Ways to Give

Your gift will not only help keep a child safe, it will help them find a brighter tomorrow

Every donation will go to helping vulnerable children whose families are in crisis. The Yolo Crisis Nursery serves children from birth to five years old. Our services are voluntary and always provided free of charge. Every child and family we serve is different, but each one is in crisis and all are in need of aid, having little or no support systems of their own. With a little help at just the right moment, families can avert crises. Rather than free-falling, they instead turn towards a more promising future.

Celebrate a Milestone

Consider hosting a birthday party, baby shower, holiday party, open house, or another celebratory event to benefit the Yolo Crisis Nursery. In lieu of gifts, ask guests to participate by bringing a diaper or formula donation to the event, or by making a monetary donation to the Yolo Crisis Nursery. Please note prior approval is requested by the Nursery. Please contact Becky Heard at bheard@yolocrisisnursery.org to learn more.

Honor a loved one

Making a donation to the Yolo Crisis Nursery is a meaningful way to honor or to remember someone special. Your gift reflects your desire to make a lasting impact on the lives of others, just as your honoree has done for you. Whether you establish a named endowed fund or make an individual gift in honor or memory of that special someone, your contribution will make a difference.

You can make a gift in honor or memory of a loved one online or by contacting Becky Heard at bheard@yolocrisisnursery.org

Other Ways to Give

A Gift of Stock or Mutual Funds

Securities can be gifted to the Yolo Crisis Nursery in one of two ways, either via electronic transfer (in which your broker transfers shares to the Yolo Crisis Nursery) or by physically mailing the paper certificates to the Nursery. Either method is acceptable, but it is necessary for you to contact your broker to initiate the transfer. Please contact Becky Heard should you or your broker require assistance with a gift of stock or mutual funds.

Benefits of gifting stock

There are many benefits to giving a gift of securities as an alternative to a cash contribution. By contributing appreciated securities, you make a powerful community contribution while gaining valuable tax advantages. If you have owned appreciated securities for at least a year and a day, your contribution can offer the following benefits:

1. Eliminates Capital Gains Tax

By donating your appreciated securities, you avoid the capital gains tax you would owe if you sold the securities yourself. The deduction of gifts of appreciated capital-gains property is limited to 30% of your adjusted gross income, subject to the five-year-carry forward provision.

2. Enjoy a Last-minute Tax Break
At the end of the calendar year, when tax breaks and timing are critical, securities can be deducted on the date you transfer them.

3. Claim the Market Value
By claiming the market value (versus the cost basis) of the securities, you can enjoy a charitable contribution tax deduction equal to the fair market value on the date of the transfer.

Mutual funds

Donating shares of mutual funds is a meaningful way to support The Yolo Crisis Nursery. Electronic delivery of mutual fund shares is the most secure and expedient delivery process available and provides efficient internal control as well as cost savings.

A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) is a direct transfer of funds from your IRA custodian, payable to a qualified charity. QCDs can be counted toward satisfying your required minimum distributions (RMDs) for the year, as long as certain rules are met.

In addition to the benefits of giving to charity, a QCD excludes the amount donated from taxable income, which is unlike regular withdrawals from an IRA. Keeping your taxable income lower may reduce the impact on certain tax credits and deductions, including Social Security and Medicare.

Also, QCDs don’t require that you itemize, which due to the recent tax law changes, means you may decide to take advantage of the higher standard deduction, but still use a QCD for charitable giving.

Can I make a QCD?

While many IRAs are eligible for QCDs—Traditional, Rollover, Inherited, SEP (inactive plans only), and SIMPLE (inactive plans only)* —there are requirements:

  • You must be 70½ or older to be eligible to make a QCD.
  • QCDs are limited to the amount that would otherwise be taxed as ordinary income. This excludes non-deductible contributions.
  • The maximum annual amount that can qualify for a QCD is $100,000. This applies to the sum of QCDs made to one or more charities in a calendar year. (If, however, you file taxes jointly, your spouse can also make a QCD from his or her own IRA within the same tax year for up to $100,000.)
  • For a QCD to count towards your current year’s RMD, the funds must come out of your IRA by your RMD deadline, generally December 31.

Any amount donated above your RMD does not count toward satisfying a future year’s RMD.

Funds distributed directly to you, the IRA owner, and which you then give to charity do not qualify as a QCD.

For any questions about making a gift of securities, please email Becky Heard, Director of Development and Community Relations at bheard@yolocrisisnursery.org.

Planned Giving Bequests

Consider providing a charitable bequest to the Yolo Crisis Nursery via a trust, will, or estate plan.

  • Specific Amount: Just as it sounds, a donor allocates an exact set of funds to an organization.
  • Reminder: In this case, a donor can choose to have a nonprofit receive any money left after all other bequests are paid out.
  • Percentage: A donor can also choose to gift your organization a set percentage of his or her total wealth.

If you are interested in making a meaningful gift of this nature, please contact Becky Heard at bheard@yolocrisisnursery.org.
